- Hierarchies establish parent\/child relationships. They don’t store the definitions of individual objects, such as positions, workers, or financial accounts<\/em><\/li>\n
- Hierarchy structures can be defined with the order of subordinate organization subtypes within a hierarchy \u2012 When a hierarchy structure is in effect, you can only create subordinate organizations of sub-types that are valid according to the hierarchy structure <\/em><\/li>\n
- Organization hierarchy roll-ups can be changed at any point <\/em><\/li>\n
- Organizational roles can be inherited down the hierarchy \u2012 Roles are filled once at a higher level and inherited by those below<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Organization Sub-Types<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Organization subtypes are created by customers to enable a delivered organization type to be further categorized <\/em><\/li>\n
- For example, Supervisory Organizations could be categorized as Divisions, Groups or Departments \u2012 Subtypes can be also be used to define levels in a hierarchy <\/em><\/li>\n
- For example, a cost center hierarchy could include organizations with sub types of Area and Function <\/em><\/li>\n
- The Organization Subtype can be appended to the organization name if configured (e.g., Benefits Department, Executive Management Group)<\/em><\/li>\n
- All Organization Subtypes are tenanted data (customer-owned)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Fundamental Organization Characteristics<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\u2018Fundamental\u2019 Organization Types have the following characteristics:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Reorganization Tasks<\/em><\/li>\n
- Availability Date <\/em><\/li>\n
- Visibility Configuration <\/em><\/li>\n
- Sub-Types are allowed <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Reorganization Tasks<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n- A Reorganization Event enables: <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\u2012 Grouping reorganization activities with a common effective date into one event for viewing and reporting purposes <\/em><\/p>\n\n- The following activities use a Reorganization Event: <\/em><\/li>\n
- Create a new organization (except for Matrix Org)<\/em><\/li>\n
- Assign Included Organizations (e.g., Region or Location in a hierarchy) <\/em><\/li>\n
- Assign workers to a custom organization<\/em><\/li>\n
- Move Retirees <\/em><\/li>\n
- Other organization maintenance activities require an effective date vs. a reorganization event and cannot be reported as part of the reorganization <\/em><\/li>\n
- Change Organization Assignments process changes organizations for workers in a supervisory organization on the same date but is not a reorganization event<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Organization Availability Date<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Defaults as Reorganization Event date when an organization is created; can be updated to an earlier date <\/em><\/li>\n
- Informational only – not used in any delivered validations <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\u2012 Workers can be assigned to organizations prior to the availability date<\/em><\/p>\n\n- Custom validations can be written to prevent the organization from being used in a transaction with an earlier effective date <\/em><\/li>\n
- If date validations are not going to be used, consider always using reorganization with an effective date of 01\/01\/1900 to prevent confusion.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Visibility<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Visibility setting on an organization controls who can view details and members of an organization<\/em><\/li>\n
- Everyone<\/em><\/li>\n
- Role Assignees<\/em><\/li>\n
- Role Assignees and Members<\/em><\/li>\n
- Role Assignees of Current and Superiors <\/em><\/li>\n
- Visibility is inherited from the superior organization and cannot be updated on subordinate organizations.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Supervisory Organizations<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Are required and critically important to HCM<\/a><\/span> \u2013 all workers are hired into a Supervisory Org <\/em><\/li>\n
- Group workers into a management hierarchy to specify who reports to whom <\/em><\/li>\n
- Supervisory Organizations report to one another to form the Supervisory Organization Hierarchy<\/em><\/li>\n
- Each Supervisory Organization has one and only one superior (parent) organization <\/em><\/li>\n
- Provide the context for staffing actions<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Locations & Location Hierarchies<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\nLocation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\nLocations are used to track business assets and physical work spaces <\/em><\/p>\n\n- Locations are also used to default data values, prompts, date formats, and time zones <\/em><\/li>\n
- Each location is configured with one or more delivered \u2018usages\u2019 types<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\u2012 E.g., Business Asset, Business Site, Campus, Par Location, Work Space, Payroll Tax <\/em><\/p>\n\n- Every position or job must be assigned to a Location with \u2018Business Site\u2019 usage <\/em><\/li>\n
- A location may roll up to another location<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Locale<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\nEnables control of display of multinational date, time, and number formats<\/p>\n
\n- To determine a self-service user\u2019s language display, Workday evaluates (in this order):<\/li>\n
- User’s language (user preferences)<\/li>\n
- User’s locale (user preferences)<\/li>\n
- User\u2019s Location language<\/li>\n
- User\u2019s Location Locale<\/li>\n
- Tenant’s language<\/li>\n
